about me

Hi, I'm Sam, and I make ordinary things look fun.

Sam J Soriano

I'm a watercolor painter and graphic designer with a soft spot for the unglamorous, and an even bigger one for Filipino food. Garlic rice. A fried egg. A slice of Spam. The things we eat on autopilot and never really look at.

I've been reaching for art supplies my whole life. As a kid I asked for crayons and paper instead of toys, and I never really stopped. Eventually it turned into a career in design, until life took a long detour and I ended up spending years leading teams in the corporate world. I love what I do, and it feeds the analytical side of me, but my creative side kept tapping me on the shoulder. So over the last few years I've been finding my way back to art, fitting it in around my day job, one piece at a time. It's the most like myself I've felt in awhile.

I grew up in Los Angeles and landed in Olympia about ten years ago. I'm half Filipino, raised by my mom and grandmother, so that's where my roots really run. I may not always look it, but the food and the traditions are the heart of everything I make. These days you'll find me with a paintbrush in one hand in my studio, or hiking with my family (hubby and pups) in the forest.

My work sits somewhere between fine art and design: bright, a little playful, and never too serious. I paint from life, scan it in, and sometimes push it further with digital and mixed-media layers. My creations are meant for others to enjoy and invoke fond memories … it could be of a meal, moment, or those you've spent time with around a table.
